Have you always wanted to spend the weekend camping on a boat? The Live-Aboard Sampler course is for you! Join Sail Nelson for a weekend of boat camping on Kootenay Lake!

Are there prerequisites?

It is highly recommended that students have a background in sailing. Alternatively, it is ideal if you have completed the Sailing Essentials or the Basic Cruising course.

What will we do?

This course is taught over 3 days and 2 nights on our flagship vessel Spindrift. This course is designed to give you a sample of what it is like to live on a boat for a long weekend.

What will I learn?

To prepare for our course, we will discuss menu planning (food not included in fee). We will also discuss trip planning and how to select an appropriate anchorage for our expected weather. We will spend the entire weekend trimming the sails and exploring the West Arm of Kootenay Lake.

What will I get?

This course is a mileage builder course and is designed to get you some extra time out on the water. As we only accept 2 students per course, there is plenty of one-on-one instruction. This enables us to really dive into whatever aspects of sailing you are looking to learn more about. If you have not completed your Basic Cruising Standard yet, we can complete it, or if you have and are looking to move up to the Intermediate Cruising Standard, we can begin to prepare you for your Intermediate course.

What’s the next step?

Once you have completed your Live-Aboard Sampler, you are stepping into the world of boat chartering. At this point in your sailing adventure, there are some classroom courses that you need to complete to move into the Intermediate Cruising Standard. Sail Nelson offers all of the courses you need to get chartering including: VHF Marine Radio, Coastal Navigation, and Intermediate Cruising.
